I volunteer at a breeding centre for endangered animals and get to see and work with an amazing array of endangered animals.

This is a page of sketches of Ivan an Asian Greater One Horned Rhinocerous and is an amazing critter, very calm and peaceful but you get the feeling he is taking your measure. Loves to have his upper lip scratched and I can never feed or clean up the results of the feeding without smiling. He is a treasure.

Near Glen Valley I came across this white longhorn, at what seemed to be a working farm. Usually, these days longhorned cattle are only on hobby farms of those who love the romance of the old time cowboy. After all who wants to deal with those formidable horns when you are trying to make a living.

I don’t remember exactly where this store is, somewhere in east Vancouver, but it is the only brick corner store I ever came across.Very unusual in the west.

This old house was right in the centre of downtown Vancouver in amongst night clubs and retail. I did this sketch early one Sunday morning and was fortunate enough to meet the owner. He was a retired truck driver and loved his crafty little workshop

For many years you could tell when winter was coming as all the bird houses and decorative bits and pieces would disappear. When they reappeared all freshly painted it was at least as good an indicator of spring as the first robin.

Sunks Produce

sunks-sto.jpgThis tiny store in the downtown east side of Vancouver is tucked in among all the rooming houses and hotels. I did this sketch years ago as part of a series on disappearing corner stores and must confess I don’t know if this one has disappeared or not, I’ll have to check next time I am down in that neck of the woods.

Not exactly what you first think of when you think of a Spa, but everything from massage to foot reflexology is offered in this pleasant wee building, there is even a chair for relaxing on the front porch.
As anyone that knows me can attest to I am not exactly a spa kind of guy but if I was to ever partake in indulgences like that, this is where I would go.

What were they thinking

kkk-sto.jpg The proprietors of this run down store were either blissfully unaware of the connotations their name evoked or were unabashed racists.I think it was done innocently but am sure it was pointed out to them over and over again
